Oran Mor

From Celtic Ceilidhs to new musical talents, corporate banquets to weddings, Òran Mór is a hive of cultural activity.  Situated on the corner of Byres Road and Great Western Road, opposite the Botanic Gardens, we are in the Heart of the West End. 

Òran Mór, meaning the great melody of life or big song, is the vision of the Glasgow businessman, Colin Beattie. His aim was to provide a cultural centre in the West End.  The success of A Play, A Pie and A Pint is a testament to this.

Refurbishment began in 2002 and the doors were opened to the waiting West End in June 2004.  Since then, Òran Mór has played host to a fine and varying programme of events.  Product launches, banquets, awards dinners, conferences, weddings, new musical talents, comedy nights, and theatre have all been a great success.

The Venue, The Auditorium, and the Private Dining Room are all available for private hire.  There is also a bar and two restaurants within the converted church. The Auditorium is a breathtaking architectural setting for a range of events, from a workshop for 70 people to a formal banquet of 264.   

Beneath the celestial ceiling mural by Alasdair Gray, one of Scotland's largest pieces of public art, guests can enjoy the fine Scottish fodder and impeccable service that has put it on the map as one of Glasgow's leading venues. With its own private entrance, private bar, natural daylight, and disabled access, the facilities are well thought out and as well as retaining the original features of the church, offer a contemporary setting in which to hold events.

The Private Dining Room is a beautifully appointed room with views over to the Kibble Palace in the Botanic Gardens.   It is perfect for discreet meetings and dinners.  It has a sumptuous seating area and private bar as well as a boardroom table.  This is a special room and can hold up to 25 for a dinner or meeting or up to around 40 for a reception. The Venue nightclub has a gritty, underground feel and is already famous for its live performances ranging from stand-up comedy to new musical talents and the popular A Play, A Pie, and A Pint.

The aisle is separated from the main nave by a series of pointed arches with carved stone pillars. Fairy lights are draped from the ceiling and rich wall paintings and circular stained-glass windows punctuate the far, outer wall. The floor is a highly polished wood and its width is covered with rows of gold chairs with blue velvet seats.

The side aisles are separated from the main nave by a series of pointed arches with stone pillars; the outer walls have circular stained-glass windows. A mezzanine level balcony is apparent, at the end of the room, above the top table.

  • An interior of Oran Mor's bar space shows a room with bare stone walls and a low ceiling with wooden beams and black steel columns running the length of an old fashioned, wooden, panelled bar. The bar stretches the full length of the space, the fridges and shelves behind are fully stocked with bottles and 4 old fashioned wooden barrels are also visible on the top shelf. Tall wooden stools are placed intermittently along the bar, on the left tables with stools and chairs are placed beside each window.
